If you think you have a STD it is time to get tested.  Some people who have a STD have no symptoms.

Gonorrhea & Chlamydia

• Gonorrhea & Chlamydia can infect female reproductive organs and the urinary tract.

• It can also infect the eyes causing conjunctivitis and throat causing pharyngitis.

• Some people with gonorrhea & chlamydia infections have no symptoms.  Routine screeing is recommended for people who have a new sexual partner or many sexual partners.

• Some symptoms of gonorrhea are abnormal discharge, pain with urination and pelvic pain.

• Gonrrhea & chlamydia can be treated with antibiotics.  It is important to take all of your antibiotics and avoid exposure to infected partners until they are also treated.

• If Gonorrhea & chlamydia are not treated it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease in females which causes scarring of the fallopian tubes.  The fallopian tubes connect the ovaries that hold the eggs to the uterus.  The scarring of the fallopian tubes can make it difficult to get pregnant because the egg has a difficult time traveling from the ovay to the uterus.

Syphilis

• Some people who have syphilis have no symptoms.  

• One of the first signs of syphilis is a sore on the genitals.  If left untreated it can damage all of your organs and cause neurologic problems like dementia and meningitis.

• Syphilis is a bacterial infection that can be cured with an antibiotic.

HIV

• HIV is a virus that has no cure.  At this time once you test positive for the virus you will always have it in your body.  There are medications that keep the virus from getting worse and multiplying in your body.

• The best way to prevent HIV is to use a condom and to have fewer sexual partners.
